Interlinear

To display multiple bible versions in interlinear form:

  • Slide the view level slider (upper right corner) all the way the the right for Advanced view. 
  • Enter or select the primary version in the Translation / Commentary box. The primary version establishes the word order for the interlinear display. 
  • Enter or select the Comparison versions in the Comparison versions box. Only the versions marked with a capital I (interlinear) in the menu are compatible with interlinear display, for example, ESV, WHNU, SpaTDP, CUns and OHB. 
  • Enter the passage you want to display in the Bible text box. 
  • Select Interlinear from the display options menu (will be shown as).

STEP goes beyond the concept of Interlinear and Reverse interlinear. Any version can used to set the order of the words. Switching the order of an interlinear requires one click on the version abbreviation displayed at the left of each line. For example, to switch between Spanish and Greek word order click on WHNU displayed at the left of any Greek line. This will promote the  WHNU (Westcott and Hort Greek New Testament) to the Primary version window.

The sample screens show: ESV (English) word order, SpaTDP (Spanish) word order switched to WHNU (Greek) word order.  

Notes: 

  • You can view as many versions as you like, so long as they have the interlinear feature indicated in the Comparison versions  with a capital I marker to the right of the version name.
  • Different versions are tagged in different ways. Some link the original Greek or Hebrew original to all the words produced in the translation, and some link it to the most significant word. For example, the first Hebrew in Genesis (bereshit) is linked with "In the beginning" in the KJV and is linked with "beginning" in the ESV. Both methods have benefits and pitfalls. 
  • An important warning to the unwary: The current alignment of words depends on them being present and tagged correspondingly between different versions. This means that some words may be omitted from subsequent versions - words that do not appear in, or are tagged differently from the top version. Always check (for example, by viewing in interleaved mode), before assuming that you are seeing the full text in interlinear form.

If different verse numbering is used in these versions, the numbering follows the top version (see explanation).
